Sencha Launches Program To Help Flex Software Developers Migrate To HTML5-Based Development

            {press-excerpt}

Comprehensive array of tools, webinars and educational resources help Adobe® Flex® Software developers make the switch to professional development tools that leverage their core skills. Sencha technologies enable Flex developers to create rich, Web-standards-based apps that reach millions of mobile users via their browser, today.

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.: The rise to prominence of touch-based tablets and smartphones running Apple iOS and Google Android means millions of Flex developers are eager to develop rich Web apps and user experiences that can run in the browser, plug-in free. Sencha, the leading provider of HTML5 frameworks and tools for desktop and mobile application developers, is launching an initiative that gives Flex developers the tools, training and support they need to smoothly transition to open Web technologies based on HTML5.

Starting today, Sencha is offering Flex developers a variety of ways to become familiar with the Sencha suite of professional tools, which include Sencha Designer, a full-featured application builder for mobile and desktop Web applications, and Sencha Touch, the industry’s leading JavaScript framework for developing HTML5 Web apps and mobile-packaged applications.

Ted Patrick, Sencha director of developer relations, sees Sencha technology as a great fit for Flex developers who want to reach the rapidly growing market for HTML5 applications: “Developing with Sencha frameworks enables Flex developers to leverage their core skills and build apps from classes, components, and JavaScript that deliver pixel-perfect rendering across all popular mobile and desktop platforms. In addition to our professional-grade tools, Sencha offers the training, support, and documentation that Flex developers need to tackle serious development projects.”

HTML5-focused tools and training resources designed specifically for Flex developers

To help Flex developers ramp up fast with new HTML5 technologies, Sencha has developed an educational curriculum and tools designed specifically for Flex developers. The Sencha initiative kicks off with a free webinar: Moving from Flex to HTML5 and Sencha. Along with the webinar, Sencha is delivering a series of HTML5 applications roadshow training events in the coming months, and has published a white paper: The Development Manager’s Quick Guide to HTML5. In addition, Sencha is developing additional features for its products to make it easier to connect to SOAP and SOA-based backends, and is implementing support for Adobe Action Message Format™ (AMF) to make it easier for developers to leverage existing backends while migrating their user interfaces to Sencha-based technology.

“Sencha frameworks provide a solid transition for Flex developers who want to get productive with HTML5,” said Brett Cortese, president & CEO of Universal Mind. “We’re excited by the speed and efficiency we’ve gained by using Ext JS and Sencha Touch for our clients’ projects. We’re also glad to be a part of the strong partner community and ecosystem that Sencha has built.”

“Sencha is our vendor of choice for JavaScript frameworks. Ext JS and Sencha Touch are well architected, cleanly extensible, and offer a solid foundation for any serious JavaScript development. Plus, we can take advantage of the Sencha professional-grade technical support, training and services to support our consulting projects,” said Yakov Fain, managing director and partner of Farata Systems.

“Sencha Touch is built from the ground up to leverage HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript, enabling us to build rich Web applications that look and feel native right out of the box,” said Craig Walker, CTO of Xero. “Relying on the extensive set of UI widgets, layouts and animations in a well-designed and extensible framework, we were able to start building features immediately from day one rather than worrying about the underlying architecture. Plus, we were able to leverage our existing skills and use open Web technologies.”

“Sencha frameworks provide a component layer and solid structure to ensure our large dev teams stay in sync when we create intricate components for our clients’ multi-layer enterprise apps,” said Michael Labriola, senior consultant and founding partner of Digital Primates. “We’re excited about the advantages of the lightweight deployment model, and the cross-browser compatibility is very compelling.”

Sencha technologies are a great fit for Flex developers
Sencha offers Flex developers a fast path to getting productive with HTML5. Similar to Flex, Sencha frameworks are object-oriented and component-based, and offer a rich set of UI widgets, layouts, and animations, with complete object lifecycle management and event handling. For more rapid development, Flex developers can use Sencha Designer, a visual application builder for the creation of complex user interfaces, data models and controllers. Sencha toolsets and frameworks are backed by professional-grade technical support, services and training.

Additional capital injected to accelerate growth and further develop the increasing demand for HTML5 applications.

AUSTIN, Texas [SenchaCon 2011 Developer Conference]: Sencha, the leading provider of HTML5 frameworks and tools for desktop and mobile application developers, has completed a $15 million Series B round of funding. Jafco Ventures led the round, with participation from existing investors Sequoia Capital and Radar Partners. Sencha made the announcement at its third annual developer conference, SenchaCon, where the company is showcasing its latest innovations to its global community of more than one million application developers.

“We are thrilled to lead this round of financing,” said Joe Horowitz of Jafco. “Sencha stands out as having a remarkable team, great customer traction, and an amazing ability to create the kind of products that makes me wish I was a mobile app development engineer.” According to Jim Goetz, general partner of Sequoia Capital, “This latest funding enables Sencha to accelerate product development and technology acquisitions, add key talent to its development team, and expand its Silicon Valley office premises.” Sencha raises the Series B round after enjoying extraordinary market momentum since closing its $14 million funding in June of last year. As part of this financing Joe Horowitz, managing general partner of Jafco Ventures will join the Sencha board of directors.

The industry’s most comprehensive line-up of HTML5 development frameworks and tools
Demand for Sencha Web application frameworks and tools is driven by two key trends in both business and consumer markets. Publishers, retailers and developers of consumer-facing apps are turning to the mobile Web and the latest HTML5 technologies as the most flexible and risk-free strategy to reach mobile users on smartphones and tablets. Sencha application development frameworks and creative tools enable companies to create compelling Web experiences across the widest range of devices, and especially for the latest touch-based phones and tablets.

“The last 18 months have seen Sencha grow into the world’s leading provider of HTML5 frameworks and tools that enable the creation of amazing experiences on the mobile Web,” said Michael Mullany, CEO of Sencha. “We have an expansive vision for the future of HTML5 application development that encompasses SDKs, tools and cloud services to give developers fast time to market, flexibility and reach. This financing will enable us to aggressively pursue this vision through further product innovations and acquisitions.”

Meteoric Rise of HTML5 Fuels Demand for Sencha Technologies

In a world of increasingly closed applications platforms, Sencha extends its lead as the open-Web alternative, with development technologies that span frameworks, tools and the cloud, and that enable the creation of tomorrow’s multi-device Web.

AUSTIN, Texas [SenchaCon 2011 Developer Conference]: With more then six hundred of the world’s top Web application developers gathered at its third annual developer conference, Sencha, the leading provider of HTML5 frameworks and tools for desktop and mobile application developers, has been showcasing its complete suite of developer tools for designing, developing and deploying tomorrow’s sharing-enabled HTML5 Web applications.

“Looking at the phenomenal rise of HTML5 as the next industry standard for Web development, it’s clear that 2011 has been a transformational year for this powerful set of Web technologies. Sencha products have been a major driver of the increased interest in HTML5 because we give developers, for the first time, a way to harness emerging HTML5 technologies and create highly functional Web applications that erase the line between native apps and Web apps,” said Michael Mullany, CEO of Sencha.

Sencha offers developers an end-to-end platform for building and deploying mobile apps

• Sencha Touch. This flagship Sencha product has emerged as a frontrunner among mobile application development frameworks. Since its launch last year, more than 400,000 developers have downloaded Sencha Touch and created tens of thousands of apps that run across the most popular touch-based smartphones and tablets. Some of the best Sencha Touch applications are featured in the Sencha Touch App Gallery, with more added every week. Recent product feature enhancements have included touch-based charting, which gives users the ability to interact with live data on any device.

• Sencha Animator. The newest Sencha tool for creative professionals lets them design and deploy plug-in free, CSS3-based animations. Feedback from the developer community about Animator has been extremely positive. With more than 10,000 downloads in the two weeks since its launch, and over 2,000 Tweets, Animator is capturing the attention of designers looking to create mobile ads that can run on any platform.

• Ext JS 4. Hundreds of thousands of customer sites around the world now use the flagship Sencha framework for creating rich Internet applications in mission-critical environments. Recent enhancements have added HTML5 charting, giving users the ability to interact with data using the latest Web technologies.

• Ext Designer. The Sencha prototyping tool for rapid application development is now in use at thousands of customer locations, speeding time to market for advanced user interface design projects. This week at SenchaCon, Sencha previewed version 2 of Designer, the first HTML5 app builder with complete desktop and mobile support.

• Sencha.io. This week, Sencha also previewed its entry into HTML5 cloud services, with Sencha.io, a mobile cloud service that gives client developers an easy backend solution that handles user login, inter-user messaging, application data sharing, and deployment.

As just one usage example, Sencha HTML5 developer tools and SDKs are currently being used by developers who are part of the AT&T Foundry innovation initiative, enabling them to create HTML5-based experiences that can be accessed from AT&T handsets. “AT&T and Sencha are working together to give developers the tools and network access APIs they need to create incredibly powerful and versatile Web apps, faster,” said Carlton Hill, VP of device operations and developer services at AT&T. “SenchaCon provides a perfect venue to share our vision for the mobile Web, and a chance to gather insights and feedback from some of the world’s top developers.”

“The Web has always been about openness and innovations that enable interoperability. Sencha is leading the way with a suite of open, Web-focused technologies,” added Mullany. “Our frameworks, tools and cloud services, enable developers to create rich and highly engaging Web experiences that are free from platform and device constraints.”

Sencha.io, now available in open beta, enables developers to create Web experiences that are rich, multi-client, and shareable.

AUSTIN, Texas [SenchaCon 2011 Developer Conference]: Sencha, the leading provider of HTML5 frameworks and tools for desktop and mobile application developers, is expanding the range of technologies it offers to include services in the cloud. Sencha.io, now available in beta preview, is the first client-centric cloud technology designed specifically for JavaScript developers. When used in conjunction with Sencha frameworks, Sencha.io lets a developer focus on building client-side application logic while leveraging cloud services to make the application come to life.

Sencha.io enables application developers to build shared experiences that all run in the browser. Developers do not need to worry about writing server code, or dealing with hosting. Using the Sencha.io service and the SDK, application developers write their applications entirely in JavaScript, and Sencha.io utilizes cloud services as necessary. Using Sencha.io, developers simply write a client-side Sencha Touch application and use the power of the cloud to make their app come alive.

“To build a mobile experience that is multi-device, shared and enriched, a developer needs three things: frameworks, tools and cloud services,” said Aditya Bansod, senior director of product management at Sencha. “Sencha.io extends the range of technologies we offer developers, giving them a way to quickly add data, messaging and features to their apps, and to then deploy them from the cloud for smooth and reliable execution on any device. In comparison to more traditional server-side platform-as-a-service solutions, we’ve simply eliminated the need for server-side code.”

Read more about the beta 1 release of Sencha.io on the Sencha blog.
Beta 1 of Sencha.io is available for developers at developer.sencha.io.

Sencha.io enables the creation of shared, multi-device Web experiences

The proliferation of social interaction throughout applications and websites means that the mobile Web is now an increasingly participatory experience. Developers no longer want to build applications that focus on the single user experience; instead they want to build applications that allow sharing between users, and for users to share their data between their devices. But designing and building apps that can do this, while simply managing disconnected state, multiple accounts, and synchronization is a daunting problem.

For example, even in a simple online poker game, each player needs identification (online/offline), role (sequence of play), and status (chips at hand and in play). Sencha.io dramatically simplifies the task of developing this class of Web application by providing four core services:

Login — allows users to log in to applications using Facebook or Twitter accounts, or accounts specific to the application. Login makes it simple to retrieve user data and store information about an app’s users.

Data — Sencha.io Data makes it simple to store data in the cloud with just one line of code in a Sencha Touch application. Data is synchronized across all devices and can be shared between users. Even when a mobile device is offline, applications can still read and write data and Sencha.io Data will transparently sync when the device rejoins the network.

Messages — easy person-to-person and system-to-system messages is a critical service for a cloud. Sencha.io Messages enables users and applications to communicate easily with each other. For example: notifying a friend it’s their turn to play, or moving an in progress game from your mobile phone from your desktop.

Deployment — even client applications need to serve code; Sencha.io Deployment makes it easy for developers to deploy their applications and optimize their application images for various mobile device screen sizes. Deployment includes a management portal that allows developers to manage versions of their applications and a fully sandboxed development environment for testing and collaboration.

“Now that users are constantly on the move from their desktop to mobile devices, we can provide the best app experience with Sencha.io Data and Sencha.io Deployment,” said Luc Stakenborg, owner and consultant at Oxida. “Using Sencha.io Deployment to deliver high- and low-resolution images, and Sencha.io Data to share user settings across devices was essentially ‘plug and play.’ We didn’t need to develop a custom solution, so we were up and running in the cloud in a few hours.”

Sencha Animator, the first professional tool for creating CSS-based animations, lets interactive designers create high-quality HTML5/CSS3-based animations that run smoothly on mobile devices and ad networks, without requiring a plug-in.

SAN FRANCISCO (Adobe MAX, booth 214): Sencha, the leading provider of HTML5 frameworks and tools for desktop and mobile application developers, has shipped Sencha Animator, the industry’s first commercial tool optimized for the creation of CSS3-based animations that run plug-in free. Note to media: a comprehensive press kit is available online.

Sencha Animator enables professional designers and advertising creatives to leverage Web standards and create highly engaging, cross-platform animations for WebKit browsers, the latest Internet Explorer 10, and popular touchscreen mobile devices. Using Sencha Animator, creatives can build rich advertising experiences for the Web that engage more viewers on a wider range of devices, boosting click-through rates and campaign ROI.

“CSS3 animations offer both cross-platform and performance advantages over JavaScript- and Flash-based animations on mobile devices,” said Michael Mullany, CEO of Sencha. “Sencha Animator provides complete creative control over the animation via a familiar user interface, and also exports human-readable, standards-based CSS that can be edited for custom modifications.” Read more about Sencha Animator on the Sencha blog.

“Mobile is no longer optional. Sencha Animator fills the gap in Web animation tools and helps us deliver a new level of mobile creative,” said Marc Infield, partner at Infield Design. “The timeline interface is so familiar that we were producing HTML5/CSS animations in no time. And with the actions interface, creating complex interactions is intuitive. That’s what I’d expect from the people who brought us Ext JS.”

Author and deliver rich, immersive experiences using Web standards
Until now, creating animations with CSS3 has been a painstaking manual process accessible only to designers with advanced coding skills. With Sencha Animator, any designer can create CSS3 ads that rival rich-media ads made with traditional desktop applications. Sencha Animator provides complete creative control over the animation via a familiar user interface, and also offers further customization using the JavaScript language.

“Sencha Animator has opened the door to creating rich, complex animations using HTML5 and CSS3,” said Corey Lansdell, co-owner of Pulp Studios. “We build character-based animations that require lots of keyframes and tweening. With Sencha Animator, tools like motion-path tracking and timeline workflow aid us in building lush, fluid character movements. These and other tools limit the need for extensive programming, which is a huge cost savings.”

Sencha Animator extends the Sencha range of tools for Web app developers
Sencha delivers application frameworks that enable developers to create rich applications for web browsers and mobile devices using web standards like HTML5 and CSS3. Sencha Animator and Sencha Touch deliver a powerful mobile application and animation environment for developers and creative designers.

Sencha Animator extends Sencha’s tools, enabling the rapid creation of HTML5 and CSS3 assets:
• Create complex, plug-in-free animations for rich-media ads that run on any CSS3-compatible ad network.
• Powerful, intuitive, drag-and-drop development environment.

Upcoming version of Sencha Touch, the leading HTML5 mobile development platform, gives developers the option of creating cross-platform Web apps or native apps that take advantage of device APIs on Apple iOS and Android.

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. :Sencha, the leading provider of HTML5 frameworks and tools for desktop and mobile application developers, announced the forthcoming availability of Sencha Touch 2, a major upgrade to its market-leading HTML5 mobile application development framework. The highlights of the extensive list of enhancements offered in Sencha Touch 2 include native application packaging, access to more device APIs, and numerous performance enhancements that put cross-platform Web apps created with Sencha Touch at parity with many native applications.

The explosion of mobile devices and operating systems has increased the time-to-market for developers and businesses, requiring them to target an assortment of platforms in order to maximize the reach of their applications. HTML5 and Web-standard technologies have emerged as a way to build an application on a single codebase that spans current and future devices. But HTML5 APIs that allow deep device access are not yet widespread on mobile browsers. Sencha Touch 2 will accelerate API access for developers by making these APIs available as part of its native packager feature.

Sencha Touch is the leading framework for mobile Web app development. Now approaching 500,000 downloads, Sencha Touch has been used by companies to develop powerful mobile apps: Xero delivers online accounting software; JARVUS Innovations develops custom software and mobile applications for high-profile clients; Stella & Dot built a mobile app to keep its stylists productive on the road; and Vimeo gave attendees mobile access to their festival and awards show content.

In addition to device access APIs and native packaging, Sencha Touch 2 offers a variety of new features for developers, including radically improved performance and ease of use. For more details about the features, read the Sencha blog.

“Sencha Touch was the first HTML5 framework to give developers a complete tool for building mobile Web applications optimized for touch-driven devices. Sencha Touch 2 leverages the latest advances in HTML5, enabling developers to build Web experiences that rival native apps,” said Aditya Bansod, senior director of product management at Sencha. “And, with native packaging features now built into Sencha Touch, developers can quickly go from an idea on a whiteboard to an app they can deliver on the Web, and now deliver to the top mobile app stores.”

Sencha Touch pricing and availability
Sencha Touch 2 will be available as a public beta by the end of September and will remain a free download from www.sencha.com.

Sencha’s Web app development tools span enterprise, consumer and mobile sectors, representing a disruptive market presence that expands the capabilities of cross-platform, cross-browser Web applications.

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.: Sencha, the leading provider of HTML5 frameworks and tools for desktop and mobile application developers, has been has been chosen by AlwaysOn as one of the AlwaysOn Global 250 winners. Inclusion in the AlwaysOn Global 250 signifies leadership among its peers and recognition of Sencha’s game-changing approaches and technologies that are likely to disrupt existing markets and entrenched players in the Global Silicon Valley. Sencha was specially selected by the AlwaysOn editorial team and industry experts spanning the globe based on a set of five criteria: innovation, market potential, commercialization, stakeholder value, and media buzz.

Sencha and the other AlwaysOn Global 250 companies were honored at AlwaysOn’s ninth annual Innovation Summit at the Louis B. Mayer Theatre at Santa Clara University in California. The Innovation Summit’s goal is to identify the most promising entrepreneurial opportunities and investments in the global tech industry. The two-day executive gathering highlighted the significant economic, political, and commercial trends affecting the world’s technology industries.

“This year’s AlwaysOn Global 250 are companies driven by the biggest mega-trends, including the accelerating growth of mobile users, cloud computing, SaaS offerings, globalization, and the socialization of commerce and basically everything online,” says Tony Perkins, founder and editor of AlwaysOn. “This year’s winners clearly represent some of the highest-growth opportunities we’ve seen in the private company marketplace in the history of the global Silicon Valley.”

The AlwaysOn Global 250 winners were selected from among thousands of domestic and international technology companies nominated by investors, bankers, journalists, and industry insiders. The AlwaysOn editorial team conducted a rigorous, three-month selection process to finalize the 2011 list.

Web apps are game-changers for application development and deployment
Demand for Sencha open-source Web application frameworks and tools is being driven by two key trends in both business and consumer markets. Publishers, retailers and developers of consumer-facing apps are gravitating toward mobile Web technologies as a flexible solution for reaching mobile users on smartphones and tablets. This transition has been accelerated by the emergence of advanced, WebKit-based mobile browsers that embed the latest HTML5 technologies. In addition, many enterprises have begun to migrate their core enterprise applications from first-generation Web architectures to modern, single-page Web applications powered by the latest AJAX technologies. Enterprises and development firms are increasingly choosing Sencha tools and SDKs because of their ability to deliver faster development times and better user experiences on both the desktop and mobile devices.

“We are honored to be recognized by AlwaysOn as an AlwaysOn Global 250 winner, and to be invited to participate at this year’s Innovation Summit,” said Michael Mullany, CEO of Sencha. “This accolade certainly reflects the increasing importance of tools that enable developers to create highly functional websites and Web apps that can engage computer users around the world.”

Sencha Touch Charts Sparks A Revolution In Data Interaction and Visualization On The Web

            {press-excerpt}

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.: Sencha, the leading provider of HTML5 frameworks and tools for desktop and mobile application developers, is adding a new “digital” dimension to mobile information by giving users of smartphones and tablets the ability to explore and interact with data using gestures. Now in beta, Sencha Touch Charts enables mobile developers to build Web apps that let users dive into complex data, using gestures to explore data in a fun and exhilarating way. Until now, this level of data interaction has only been possible with native technologies; delivering this functionality within a mobile browser via HTML5 is an industry first.

“Sencha Touch Charts renders stunning charts at the same fidelity as native, which means developers can present complex data within their Web apps without having to rely on native drawing packages,” said Abe Elias, CTO of Sencha. “The result is a whole new set of user interactions with complex datasets – information comes alive at your fingertips. Customers are describing the interactivity of Sencha Touch Charts as eye-popping. Animations are smooth and entertaining, and features such as pinch-zoom, drag and drop to merge a data series, and tap to view details are among the favorites.”

Sencha Touch Charts lets Web app developers give their mobile users the charting and data visualization functionality that they’ve been waiting for. It uses HTML5 technologies to render charts, capture multi-touch inputs and drive interactivity – making it ideal for Web apps that present business, financial and scientific data. Simple gestures can be used to control data exploration. For example, a simple swipe will pan across a dataset, whereas a “reverse pinch” will zoom into detail. Richer interactions such as axis swaps, aggregation, filtering and more are all enabled by similarly simple gestures. Sencha Touch Charts uses HTML5 Canvas technology, which is fully supported by the latest WebKit browsers that ship with Android, Apple iOS, BlackBerry OS6, and HP WebOS.

“Sencha Touch enabled us to build a state-of-the-art mobile app, and now Sencha Touch Charts allows us to deliver rich, professional and engaging visualizations of our customers’ financial data,” said Craig Walker, CTO of Xero. “Sencha Touch Charts makes it easy for our customers to get a snapshot of their financials and see how their business is doing. We can provide the kind of interactivity smartphone users have come to expect, allowing them to use their hands to manipulate data with gestures like pinch, zoom, and pan.”

“Sencha Touch Charts enables us to present data in our mobile apps and provides the best user experience we’ve seen in the browser,” said Rajesh Farkare, senior development engineer at Accept Corporation. “Using simple gestures, our users can explore rich data sets. With Sencha Touch Charts, we were able to quickly integrate data into our application, and our developers didn’t have to spend time learning a native drawing package.”

Sencha Touch: the most powerful way to build web apps for mobile devices
Sencha Touch is built from the ground up to leverage the latest HTML5 family technologies, including geolocation, localStorage and CSS3, supported by today’s most popular mobile devices.
With demand exploding for ways to reach users on tablets and mobile phones, report reviews software development platforms that deliver consumer-facing applications on these devices.

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.: Sencha, the leading provider of HTML5 frameworks and tools for desktop and mobile application developers, has been positioned by Gartner Inc., a premier research and advisory firm, in the Visionaries Quadrant of the “Magic Quadrant for Mobile Consumer Application Platforms” (MCAP) report that was recently published by analysts William Clark and Michael J. King.

The influential analyst firm reviewed software development platforms that deliver consumer-facing applications, including HTML5 and native tool offerings, on mobile devices. Gartner identified the emergence of media tablets and the more than 5 billion mobile phones in use worldwide in 2010 as key drivers of new business opportunities for the development of mobile, business-to-consumer (B2C)-facing applications.

The MCAP Magic Quadrant aims to address the needs of Gartner clients that seek to understand in part which vendors can help them create native and Web-based experiences on smartphones and tablets, and the role that HTML5 will play in the future of mobile application development. Gartner analyzed 20 vendors whose tools enable content to be delivered via messaging, native/rich applications, cross-platform/RIA, and mobile Web/HTML5, ranking each in one of four quadrants: leaders, visionaries, challengers, and niche players. Sencha was positioned as a “Visionary” in the MCAP Magic Quadrant.

“We are honored and delighted that the analysts at Gartner deemed Sencha a visionary company in the mobile application development sector,” said Michael Mullany, CEO of Sencha. “We believe their findings are in tune with what we’re hearing from our customers, who look to Sencha to provide advanced, rich toolsets for creating tomorrow’s Web apps.”

For more information on sourcing, securing or building mobile applications and systems, as well as how technologies, development platforms and architectures that enable and support mobile applications will evolve, please visit http://www.gartner.com to get the complete copy of the Gartner “Magic Quadrant for Mobile Consumer Application Platforms,” 2011 update.

Winning entries demonstrate the power and flexibility of using theming capabilities of Compass and Sass in Sencha Touch to efficiently add branding, corporate identity and other styles to a mobile web app.

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. — June 13, 2011: Sencha, the leading provider of HTML5 frameworks and tools for desktop and mobile application developers, announced the winners of its recent Sencha Touch™ Theme Contest. The contest challenged designers to build and submit a theme (in the form of a CSS file) for a demo app (called “Roookies”) created by Sencha. A panel of five judges selected three winners, which can be viewed and experienced on the Sencha blog.

First Place: Onyx by Paul DeVay

This theme got a huge thumbs-up from the judges for its clever usage of contemporary CSS3 in the toolbar and in the icon bar to create a gently changing color scheme. The cutout effect also impressed, with its use of SVG, and the overall look and feel of the design exuded a discreet and well-stated elegance. Paul is a senior visual designer at Frog Design in Austin, Texas and wins a MacBook Air and an iPad 2.

Until he started work on his entry, Paul had minimal experience with Sencha Touch. He explained that, while the initial learning curve was a little steep in terms of figuring out what I could actually change, “…once I got a handle on the Sencha mixins and includes, editing the theme became pretty simple. The fact that Sencha Touch uses Compass is a definite plus, as it makes iterating on design ideas much faster and simpler. Also the custom Sencha mixins were very helpful.”

Paul also shared his views on the power of web apps for mobile applications: “Having the flexibility to go across platforms is really great. This is especially true for apps that need to reach a lot of people when there isn’t enough development time or budget to make separate native apps for different devices.”

Second Place: Basic by Amanda Martin

When reviewing this entry, the judges noted that: “Sometimes less is more. This theme, with its simple, white appearance, makes sure that the content – itself a set of diverse visual images – gets the focus of the viewer’s eye.” Judges also liked the bold images used for the icons, and the faint dotted lines that guide the eye to the layout of the application as a whole. Amanda is also a senior visual designer at Frog Design in Austin, Texas and wins a RIM BlackBerry PlayBook and an iPad 2.

Commenting on her entry and her experience with Sencha Touch, Amanda said: “Being able to create one design and have compatibility across multiple devices inspired me to check out Sencha Touch and really see what it was capable of. The proof is in the pudding, there were so many diverse submissions for this contest! Having seen other work created in Sencha Touch, there seemed to be so many different opportunities.

“I got started by just opening up Photoshop and getting to work, creating designs I liked and that complemented the “Roookies” app. I took two, separate approaches, but in the end the pure, clean, “Basic” approach that I thought resonated with the content type must have done the same for the judges. It also demonstrates the flexibility of Sencha by showing that you can implement a unique design whether or not you use the templates.”

Asked about the suitability of web apps and native apps for mobile, Amanda added: “Both have their time and place. When fast implementation or flexibility is needed, creating a web app that can reach a multitude of devices with a fraction of the production time makes sense. This is where Sencha shines. With no need for updates and more tools providing richer experiences for web apps, I think we will see them continue to get better. On the other hand, native apps can really get at the nuances of a device and may offer integrated designs and interactions.”

Third Place: Stitches by Matt Baker
The judges saw many themes that featured a textile, metal or stone look – each quite appropriate for touch-oriented mobile applications. They decided that “Stitches” was a strong example of the genre, with a subtle leather texture, stitching motif, and matching toolbar font. Matt is a developer and partner at 5 to 9 Studio and wins an iPad 2.

“I wanted to create a design that combined natural textures with a theme that mirrored the sports example provided by the Sencha site. That led me to the stitched leather look, which I spent the better part of a day designing,” Matt said. “I’ve been using Sencha Touch for mobile sites for a couple months now, and I’m amazed at the flexibility of the framework in designing both phone and tablet web apps. Although web apps have been treated as second-class citizens on mobile devices, they provide several benefits (such as instant updates and freedom from mobile application store limitations). We’ve been able to take a native legislative directory iPhone app and convert it to a web app using Sencha Touch over a weekend. It feels, looks and acts like the native app, down to the pixel.”

“Mobile businesses are beginning to realize the benefits of developing beautiful mobile applications with web technologies such as HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript, and yet still be able to deliver native-like experiences to their users,” said James Pearce, senior director of developer relations at Sencha. “What impressed us during this contest was just how beautiful these could actually be! Sometimes it’s easy to forget that these applications are simply running in a web browser – and of course that means that traditional web designers can re-use their existing skills and tools in this new medium. The results speak for themselves and certainly demonstrate the enormous potential that design expertise can bring to the mobile web as a whole.”

Sencha Ships Ext JS 4: The Industry’s Most Advanced JavaScript Framework

            {press-excerpt}

Ext JS 4 raises the bar for cross-browser web apps. New features include plug-in-free charting, fully customizable theming, upgraded components — all packaged in a modern app framework that delivers high-quality, predictable results faster and easier than ever.

04.26. 2011 — REDWOOD CITY, Calif.: Sencha, the leading provider of HTML5 frameworks and tools for desktop and mobile application developers, has completed development of Ext JS 4, which is now available for immediate download. Ext JS 4, the company’s biggest software release in two years, represents a major upgrade of the flagship Sencha JavaScript framework, which is used by more than one million developers to create amazing cross-browser app experiences that execute with precision and performance. Highlights of the release include major enhancements to the drawing and charting capabilities of Ext JS, comprehensive cross-browser support, and an improved data package — all based on a modern architecture.

“Ext JS 4 is the most advanced framework we've ever shipped, and gives enterprises and development firms tremendous firepower to build the next generation of cross-platform web apps,” said Abe Elias, Sencha’s CTO. “Whether you’re using our new UI components, the new charting package, or theming your application, Ext JS 4 makes it easy to build an advanced, highly functional app that harnesses the power and ubiquity of the web, regardless of which browser you're using.”

“Ext JS is the core client-side framework for Marketo applications. We're excited about the new features in Ext JS 4, especially the plug-in-free charting package, modern framework and performance improvements,” said Glen Lipka, senior director of user experience at Marketo. “With the new charting package, we can build rich, fast animations, and they're completely integrated. In addition, the modern framework enables us to add new features in a couple of weeks instead of months. We’ve been using Ext JS since 2007, and it has allowed us to focus on building feature-rich applications that help us grow our business.”

Plug-in-free charting

Ext JS 4 is leading the industry trend away from relying on plug-ins, which includes Apple's decision to ship the latest Macs without browser plug-ins. Ext JS 4 delivers a wide assortment of the most advanced drawing, charting and graphing capabilities of any JavaScript framework, and renders pixel-perfect visuals on every popular browser and OS. The new drawing and charting packages leverage SVG and VML, and equip developers to add advanced graphics, charts and graphs to their web apps, confident that they will look sharp on everything from Internet Explorer 6 to Chrome.

“We are very impressed with the increased performance of Ext JS 4 and all of the advanced new features, including charting, grids, and the MVC-based app framework,” said Nils Dehl, senior developer at dkd Internet Service GmbH. “Using Ext JS 4 charting components, we're able to build richer, cross-browser web applications that are exceptionally responsive, without the need for plug-ins. Plus, the MVC app framework makes it easy for our developers to build new applications very quickly by leveraging our existing app structure and architecture.”

Theming

Recognizing that the look and feel of any application is just as important as its functional capabilities, Ext JS 4 harnesses technology originally developed for Sencha Touch to make the framework more themeable than ever. Every aspect of the framework’s appearance can be customized, often by simply adjusting a single variable.

Industry-leading cross-browser support

Sencha has always been synonymous with excellent cross-platform execution that enables developers to deploy the same code on the widest array of browsers and operating systems. Ext JS 4 goes even further, delivering high-fidelity support for more than ten years of browsers in one release: Chrome 5+, Firefox 3+, Internet Explorer 6+, Safari 3.2+, and Opera 10+. On modern browsers, Ext JS 4 harnesses the power of HTML5 with capabilities such as CSS3 styling, and gracefully falls back to alternative solutions on legacy browsers.

Modern app framework

Ext JS 4 is a major step forward for web frameworks. It adds more than 270 new APIs, 35 new classes, and extensive new documentation. Ext JS 4 also includes significant enhancements to the data package — one of the most-loved components of Ext JS. The data package enables developers to use a model-view-controller (MVC) application architecture to build larger and more complex web applications. Enhancements in this release enable apps to leverage features like Infinite Scrolling and the new, smarter Grid Components to add an entirely new level of interactivity to web apps.

“Ext JS 4 looks great, and it’s a huge leap forward in client-side development for our products,” said Stefan Gehrig, system architect at TEQneers. “With its easy migration path, Ext JS 4 will soon be part of all our major applications. Our users and developers will benefit because of the cross-browser support and increased performance.”

Sencha tools set the industry standard with wide community acceptance

Enterprises are already migrating their core enterprise applications from first-generation Web architectures to modern, single-page Web applications powered by the latest AJAX technologies. Enterprises and development firms are increasingly choosing Sencha tools and SDKs because of their ability to deliver faster development times and better user experiences. As a result, the Sencha developer community has more than doubled over the last year and now numbers over 230,000 registered members. The recent launch of SenchaDevs, a directory of application development firms experienced with Sencha technologies, has attracted more than 400 partner signups.

Sencha Ext JS 4 pricing and availability

Sencha Ext JS 4 is available now from www.sencha.com. Current customers with a valid Standard or Premium support subscription will receive Ext JS 4 as a part of their support agreement. Single developer licenses start at $329 or $595 with included support. Volume discounts and further pricing details are available on the Sencha website.

Application framework and tools vendor hires aggressively; HTML5 technologies drive demand for highly functional web apps that deliver native-like experiences on advanced mobile devices.

04.05.2011 — Redwood City, CA: Sencha, the leading provider of HTML5 frameworks and tools for desktop and mobile application developers, is experiencing rapid growth, fueled by record sales and downloads of its advanced tools for developing rich web applications. With more than a million downloads during the last year, Sencha tools and SDKs allow developers to showcase the rich experiences delivered by modern Web apps on both desktop and mobile devices.

Enterprises and development firms are increasingly choosing Sencha tools and SDKs because of their ability to deliver faster development times and better user experiences. As a result, the Sencha developer community has more than doubled over the last year and now numbers over 220,000 registered members. The recent launch of SenchaDevs, a directory of application development firms experienced with Sencha technologies, attracted over 350 partner signups in its first few weeks. Sencha’s tools are even spawning companies dedicated to creating web apps with its tools.

Sencha is hiring aggressively, with a focus on software engineers to develop its mobile Web product line. The company recently tripled its office space, moving from downtown Palo Alto to ten thousand square feet of space in the Pacific Shores Center in Redwood City. “We quickly outgrew the Palo Alto offices, and our new location gives us the runway we need for our continued rapid growth,” said Abraham Elias, CEO of Sencha.

This transition has been accelerated by the emergence of advanced mobile browsers that embed the latest HTML5 technologies. In addition, many enterprises have begun to migrate their core enterprise applications from first-generation Web architectures to modern, single-page Web applications powered by the latest AJAX technologies.

“We’re seeing an incredibly positive response from developers who are inspired by the potential that HTML5 offers on advanced platforms such as Android, iPad, and the RIM Playbook. This generation of tablets demands touch- and gesture-driven interfaces and this is spurring a wave of new application development,” said Michael Mullany, Sencha’s VP of marketing and products. “2011 is shaping up to be the Year of HTML5, and Sencha offers the broadest array of tools for developing applications that leverage these technologies.”

Sencha tools see broad adoption across all market sectors

In the last 12 months, Sencha has added over 5,000 paying customers across all markets — from in-house enterprise developers, to Web development shops, to major OEM partners. Sencha technology powers the user interfaces of some of the world’s most important Web properties, providing rich, responsive application experiences for users, whatever their browser or platform.

“Sencha Touch enables us to build mobile Web apps that perform and look like native apps, and it allows us to speed up development time and support multiple platforms,” said Joseph Schmitt, Web developer at Vimeo. “By choosing Sencha Touch, we only had to build one version of our Vimeo Festival app for iPhone and Android, which gave us a huge head-start on our development. We were able to add more features and still make our very tight deadline. We got to focus on building a great mobile app that provided a more interactive experience and became an essential tool for attendees by allowing them to ‘check-in’ to the video wall, view and ‘like’ videos, and create personalized schedules.”

“We’ve been using Ext JS for our entire client-side framework since 2007, and it gives us exactly what we need to deliver a gorgeous user interface and a great user experience,” said Glen Lipka, senior director of user experience at Marketo. “By using Ext JS, we speed up our development time and enhance our designs for modals, trees, drop-down boxes, and components. Plus, we get the benefits of cross-platform support, which greatly reduces our testing burden. Ext JS frees us to focus on building differentiated features for our customers. We’re looking forward to Ext JS 4 and continuing to push the envelope with support for new browser capabilities and interactivity.”

“Ext GWT reduces the complexity of building high-performance applications by providing support for the latest Web standards and cross browser compatibility,” said Alessandro Giannone, director and co-founder of SambaStream. “With Ext GWT, we were able to quickly produce highly optimized JavaScript code with all the advantages of using an enterprise-scale language like Java. We made extensive use of the Ext GWT library – our ListView is a real work of art, and the performance is superb. Ext GWT helped us to save months of development effort, and we’ve invested that time in building a world-class product with an innovative user experience.”
